Ubuntu Has Eye Candy Too

In a few months, the world will be assaulted by new operating systems from both Microsoft and Linux' most popular distribution, Ubuntu.

Both releases look to be mostly incremental upgrades, lacking in tons of fancy new features. In fact, in our use of the Windows 7 Release Candidate so far, the biggest difference we've noticed is that it's prettier. But Ubuntu has announced its intention to bring the bling too, and there is hope that 9.10 (Karmic Koala) might be the edition where they finally ditch the brown and go for something with a little more splash.

But you don't have to wait for that either. You can make your Ubuntu pretty right now. Here are some example screenshots of themes you can install. These are full-blown themes, and installation instructions can be found here.

Gnome Tropical theme

So far the standard artwork in the Ubuntu 9.10 alpha releases looks more like the plain brownish-style standard, Kubuntu running the new KDE looks pretty flashy. But there is still plenty of time until release, and the artwork could still change quite a bit before then.

I actually really like the current look of Ubuntu 9.04.

The pretties of an OS (especially in Windows) are the last things I get excited about. I prefer stability , functionality, and lack of annoying popup windows/boxes. Eye-candy is just icing on the cake, but if the cake is burnt, doughy, or maggoty, who cares how nice the icing is?

Since Ubuntu 9.04 already has the stability and functionality I require, I don't mind if there is focus on developing a different look to the OS

Of course, I agree also. And that is why I'm kicking the tires on Fedora 11. Sweeeet!

While usability and stability are of primary importance to me, the first thing I did after installing my Ubuntu was get rid of the eyesores they call a desktop and replace it all with things that are pretty. I don't think I could take it if I had to look at Ubuntu Ugly orange and brown all the time on the computer. One of the best things about Ubuntu and Linux in general is the huge amount of options available. If I didn't want any options, I'd just get a Mac.
