iPhone To Come To T-Mobile and Sprint Before Verizon?

The AT&T iPhone exclusivity in the U.S. is expected to end next year, and many consumers are anticipating the popular iPhone to become available on other U.S carriers. Although there has been much demand for a Verizon enabled iPhone, analyst Shaw Wu believes a 2010 Verizon iPhone deal is unlikely.

Apple would have much to gain by teaming with Verizon and its 90 million customers, but Wu believes that both Verizon and Apple will be unable to agree on one key area: "customer control." He points out that "Apple controls the media experience with iTunes and VZ with its V CAST service." Although Verizon will want to enable potential Verizon enabled iPhones with V Cast, Apple will never allow this. Much of the iPhones success comes from its overall user experience and Apple controlling this experience is what makes the iPhone the iPhone. Verizon controlling the features would mar some of the appeal of the iPhone.

Wu goes on to say that Sprint and T-Mobile would be more viable options for Apple since they would be more likely to allow Apple's customer control. T-Mobile would be the easiest to partner with as it shares a similar 3G network as AT&T, meaning that little technology would need to be changed to enable the iPhone to work on the T-Mobile network.

Although Wu believes a Verizon Apple deal is unlikely in 2010, he does feel that a deal will be more possible when Verizon transitions its networks to 4G.

    Well, that sucks. Although it does make sense. I don't see Verizon bowing to Apple's wishes anytime soon.

    I've been waiting for a Verizon iPhone ever since the iPhone came out. Guess I'll just get an iTouch and keep my stock Verizon handset.

    No one knows when, or even if, the iPhone will be available for Sprint. AT&T exclusivity deal must expire first, rumored to occur in 2010. After that, the iPhone could in theory come to Sprint, but who knows?

    Why is Verizon so bullheaded? Who cares about V Cast? People want the iPhone for the Apple experience with iTunes. V Cast sucks.

    the Sprint T-mobile combo is good news.

    Sprint (with 40~million subscribers) may help to bridge the way to Verizon's technology eventually (and Sprint's churn rate would be a great motivator to the sticky iphone.) T-mobile's 34million subscribers may actually open a backdoor to their global subscriber base of 150million! But in the USA only the two together would make sense in terms of a comparable base to that of Vz.

    I like the idea if only because I could not see myself stuck with a Verizon contract. On the other hand, Sprint is trying quite hard (and their customer service has come leaps and bounds.) Their latest plans are awesome. But their offering is stuck between the ugly rim (not really a web phone. More an email phone that get slow with web apps,) and the new microsoft called google (scarier beyond their amazing PR with google now to be aggregating your mobile profile!) At least with Apple I know I can preserve some privacy, and hopefully not have to go to the more expensive ATT plans.

    I'm a Verizon customer and ever since I got a chance to see the Android phone, it wouldn't matter to me if it never came to Verizon at all. Sorry macelly.
    With the Google phone scheduled to drop 1st quarter 2010, I have more choice. Android is really slick.
